Reaching the Public and Education
- Catalyst for effecting the public’s wish to have the Farm designated as a National Historic Site;
- Developed a readily accessible web site providing information on plant collections in the gardens on the Farm, and an on-line Guide to Locations of over 3000 trees and shrubs in the Arboretum;
- Sponsor annual Spring Garden Lecture series held by the Master Gardeners of Ottawa-Carleton at Building 72;
- Catalogued much of the dried plant collection at AAFC’s Herbarium;
- Published For the Love of Trees – A Guide to the Trees of Ottawa’s Central Experimental Farm;
- Published Ottawa’s Farm – A History of the Central Experimental Farm;
- Publish a quarterly newsletter, Friends of the Central Experimental Farm.
Gardens/Arboretum/Shelterbelt
Under AAFC guidance:
- Developed a comprehensive plan to enhance the Ornamental Gardens, Arboretum and other public areas of the Central Experimental Farm;
- Restored and rebuilt the rose and peony gardens;
- Developed an Explorer rose garden;
- Enhanced the lilac rows and created the Preston Heritage Lilac Garden;
- Developed a significant Hosta garden with member donations;
- Provided funding and labour to initiate the Fletcher Wildlife Garden, located on the Farm;
- Added almost 1,000 trees to the Arboretum through a Donor Tree Program (which ended in 2006);
- Replaced the Donor Tree Program with a commemorative wall-plaque program at the Farm’s Merivale Shelterbelt.
Events (to help raise funds to support FCEF ongoing projects on the Farm)
- Rare and Unusual Plant Sale in May;
- Used Book Sale in June;
- July 1st Strawberry Social
- Victorian Tea in the Arboretum in August;
- Art on the Farm in August;
- For the Love of the Farm Art Show and Sale in October;
- Spring and Fall Craft and Bake Sales;
- Various bus tours to sites of interest in Ontario and Quebec.
