The Friends of the Central Experimental Farm is dedicated to fostering public enjoyment and appreciation of Ottawa’s Central Experimental Farm and its value as a National Historic Site. The Friends maintains and enhances the Dominion Arboretum, the Ornamental Gardens, and the Merivale Shelterbelt, in partnership with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, and raises public awareness and knowledge about the Farm’s history and its tree and plant collections.
Over the coming three years, the Board of Directors plans to operationalize this mission through pursuit of the objectives outlined below.
It is understood that all FCEF initiatives that take place on the Farm are subject to AAFC approval.
Objectives
- Ensure that all volunteer garden teams are equipped with the skills and tools necessary to maintain the public gardens and the Arboretum in peak condition.
- Enhance the infrastructure, design, and/or plant collections of the public gardens and the Arboretum through targeted new projects and investments.
- Expand awareness-building and educational initiatives to better inform the public about the Farm’s plant collections, its historical significance, and its contribution to human well-being and environmental stewardship.
- Enhance collaborative relationships with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada and like-minded organizations to increase our capacity to deliver on our mission.

The FCEF, also known as the Friends of the Farm, is a charitable organization of committed volunteers and supportive Members who care about the Farm in Ottawa. The Friends of the Farm volunteers are located in Building 75 in the Arboretum. Find our updated office hours here.
We dedicate over 10,000 volunteer hours annually to the Farm. Some volunteers work in the gardens and others work in the office or at events, while still others drop in periodically to help on specific projects. We are young and old, skilled and unskilled, from research scientist to garden lover, but we want to make a difference and enjoy doing it!
Who’s behind the Friends of the Farm? Our Board of Directors and staff provide organizational leadership, while our hard-working volunteers provide integral support.
Our History
The FCEF was formed as a non-profit organization in 1988 with the support of Agriculture and Agri-Food (AAFC)—then known as Agriculture Canada—and a few of the department’s retirees. They set out a plan to recruit volunteers and members in the belief that such a volunteer organization, concerned about retention of the public areas of the Farm for heritage reasons and public enjoyment, could make a major contribution to the Farm’s future. This plan was essential to ensure continued enjoyment of the Ornamental Gardens and Arboretum.

Les Amis de la Ferme expérimentale centrale (les Amis) se consacrent à favoriser le plaisir que dérive le public à l’égard de la Ferme expérimentale centrale d’Ottawa, et de mettre en évidence l’importance de ce lieu historique national. Les Amis veillent à l’entretien et à l’amélioration de l’Arboretum du Dominion, les jardins ornementaux et le brise-vent Merivale, en partenariat avec Agriculture et Agroalimentaire Canada (AAC) et, de plus, conscientise le public à l’histoire de la Ferme et à ses collections d’arbres et de plantes.
Au cours des trois prochaines années, le conseil d’administration prévoit de concrétiser cette mission en poursuivant les objectifs décrits ci-dessous.
Il est entendu que toutes les initiatives des Amis qui se déroulent à la Ferme sont soumises à l’approbation de l’AAC.
Objectifs
- Veiller à ce que les bénévoles au sein des équipes de jardinage possèdent les compétences et outils nécessaires qu’exige un entretien rigoureux des jardins publics et de l’arboretum.
- Améliorer l’infrastructure, la conception et l’apparence ou présentation des collections végétales dans les jardins publics et l’arboretum grâce à de nouveaux projets et investissements ciblés.
- Élargir les initiatives de sensibilisation et d’éducation afin de mieux informer le public sur les collections végétales de la Ferme, son importance historique et sa contribution au bien-être humain et à la gestion de l’environnement.
- Améliorer les liens de collaboration avec Agriculture et Agroalimentaire Canada et autres organisations qui partagent les mêmes vues afin d’élargir notre capacité de remplir notre mission.
Nous consacrons plus de 10 000 heures de bénévolat chaque année à la Ferme. Certains bénévoles travaillent dans les jardins et d’autres font du travail de bureau ou planifient des activités. D’autres encore viennent s’ajouter pour participer à des projets spéciaux. Que nous soyons jeunes ou moins jeunes, avec des connaissances spécialisées ou pas, scientifique attitré à la recherche ou jardinier passionné, nous voulons influencer le cours des choses et, de surcroît, nous amuser en le faisant!
Qui est derrière les Amis de la ferme? Notre conseil d’administration et le personnel fournissent le leadership organisationnel, tandis que les bénévoles travaillent avec ferveur et offrent un soutien intégral.
Notre Histoire
Une organisation à but non lucratif comme celle des Amis a vu le jour avec l’appui d’Agriculture et Agro-alimentaire Canada (AAC)—connu alors sous le nom d’Agriculture Canada—et certains fonctionnaires à la retraite du ministère. Ensemble, ils ont formulé un plan d’action destiné à recruter des bénévoles et des membres. Selon eux, une organisation bénévole, dédiée à la préservation des lieux publics de la Ferme en raison de son importance patrimoniale et de l’intérêt qu’y accorde le public, pourrait contribuer de manière appréciable à l’avenir de la Ferme. Une telle planification était cruciale pour les jardins ornementaux et l’Arboretum.
