Red Fox Katsura

arbre de Katsura ‘Red Fox’

Cercidiphyllum japonicum
‘Rotfuchs’

This is a purple-leaved cultivar of a very popular Japanese tree. The shape of the Red Fox cultivar is narrow and columnar. The leaf colour changes to bluish green in summer and then orange-red in fall. Katsura trees are also noted for their ‘cotton candy’ odour in the fall. The mature height of this tree is about 15 metres. The tree is located about 40 metres east of the intersection of the Circle road with the entrance way.

Celebrating Wilbur (Wil) Sly

Our father, Wilbur (Wil) Sly (1915-2011), worked as an agrometeorologist for the Plant Research Institute in the Department of Agriculture from 1966-1976. Dad loved his research position and his location in a corner office in Building 74 at the edge of the Dominion Arboretum, complete with windows that opened to provide cross-ventilation. In the early years his office was in Building 72, the current home of the Friends of the Farm. Dad was thrilled to work at “The Farm”. It was his favourite spot in Ottawa and he delighted in showing it off to out-of-town visitors. We are pleased to honour our Dad by sponsoring this Red Fox Katsura located close to his beloved Building 74.
