Shiloh Splash Birch

bouleau ‘Shiloh Splash’

Betula nigra ‘Shiloh Splash’

Shiloh Splash is a variety of the hardy River Birch, an underutilized birch species for growing in Ottawa. It is a good selection for urban planting, not being affected by major pests that attack other birches. This cultivar, first discovered at a nursery in North Carolina, is named for its interesting leaves that are splashed with white colour. This is a small but striking tree, growing only about 5 metres tall. The tree is located about 35 metres south of the intersection of the Arboretum circle road with the entrance road.

Celebrating Carol Leger

Carol Leger was the wife of Donald Leger, long time AAFC research technician and science communicator on the Central Experimental Farm. Carol was a fervent supporter of the many programs of the CEF’s research institutes and centres, particularly those focusing on studies for Canadian livestock and poultry production.

An accomplished canine behavior expert and breeder of award winning Belgian Tervuren dogs, she loved walking and enjoying the peace of the Dominion Arboretum.

We will miss her dearly and are glad to visit her at this special spot.

This birch tree is dedicated in memory of Carol Leger (February 1949 to August 2024) by her husband of 55 years, Donald, children Kristina and Philip, and grandchildren Paige and Sarah.
