Ironwood
ostryer de Virginie
Ostrya virginiana
Ironwood gets its common name from the hardness of its wood. This native tree is often found in forest understorey around Ottawa, but it is generally overlooked for planting in urban parks and gardens. As it matures, the pyramidal shape becomes more rounded, and the bark takes on an interesting shredded appearance. The tree bears unique clusters of seed pods that somewhat resemble hops (The tree is sometimes called ‘Hop-Hornbeam’). Ironwood trees can grow to about 10 metres in height. The tree is located at the foot of a path that goes up into the woodland of the Arboretum.
Celebrating Pete Duff
The person we would like to celebrate and honour is Peter Duff. A loving and well-loved family man, Pete was gone too soon at the age of 37. He is remembered by his wife Ester Duff, and his three children Adrian, Julia, and James. His friends and family draw strength from the mark he made on this world while he was in it. In 2003 he entered the Canadian Armed Forces and joined the Essex-Kent Scottish Regiment as an infantry reservist and progressed significantly through his armed service career through his relentless pursuit of excellence. Pete served this country honourably, deploying on numerous operations.
Pete is remembered by many for his countless accomplishments, and honourable and devoted service to Canada. Those who knew him well will warmly recall him as a man who loved to laugh, to share in the company of others, and to lend support to anyone in need. Pete was passionate about his family, and incredibly proud of his children. He made everyone aware that his family was his ultimate accomplishment in life, and everything he did was done for them. Pete was the biggest hero to his children, and they looked up to him tremendously, always looking forward to their next big adventure with their dad.
We hope to celebrate Pete’s life with a Celebritree, as he loved to visit many of Ottawa’s green spaces with his family and friends.
