Swamp White Oak (2)
chêne bicolore
Quercus bicolor
This tree wasn’t thought to be native to this region until a few very mature trees were found not far from Ottawa. They can grow to an impressive size, with long coarse branches extending out from wide trunks. Like other oaks, this species is important to the ecology due to features that feed or shelter a lot of wildlife. Swamp White Oak can be identified by its leaves, dark green above and light-coloured underneath. The tree grows to about 20 metres tall. This tree grows at the bottom of the South Lookout, 10 metres east of the lowland path, and 5 metres away from a donor bench.
Celebrating Dorothy Anne Spence
Dorothy was an aunt to several arms of our extend family. Not having children of her own, she fiercely loved and encouraged those young children of her brothers and sister. She kept the extended family updated on the various nieces and nephews she was Aunt to. She rejoiced in the good news, and shared when someone was going through a tough time. No matter the news, she always encouraged us kids to look forward with positivity and was willing to be another adult “ear”, when talking to our parents just wouldn’t cut it. We lost Dorothy a few years ago in September 2022 at the young age of 90! She loved nature, walking, and being outside. To honour our dear Aunt, we would like to recognize her and her impacts on our lives by donating a tree through the CelebriTree program.
